The ElevateR | March 2022

Since the start of 2022 we have conducted a series of public presentations to inform and prepare our diverse campus communities about Workday. Between the first Workday Functional Overview in February and our Elevate Town Hall in March, we had over 1,300 staff, faculty, and students attend these public events. If you missed either of these events you can view videos of these presentations on the Elevate website. We encourage everyone to attend our future events to ensure that you learn about the latest Elevate developments (e.g., see the upcoming March 31 event below).

Per University of Maryland policy, the University recognizes that name and gender identity are central to most individuals’ sense of self and well-being, and that it is important for the University to establish mechanisms to acknowledge and support individuals’ self-identification. Many people have asked how Workday will improve the collection of personal identity information (e.g. race, gender, and ethnicity) since the current PHR and SIS systems are limited in this regard and do not meet the University’s needs. Over the last several months, the Elevate team has been working closely with stakeholders across the university system to ensure that our Workday design meets university policy and federal guidelines for data reporting. These stakeholders included the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Office of the General Counsel, LGBTQ+ Equity Center, Office of Institutional Research Planning and Assessment, TransU, and various other groups that collect and use such data.

As a result of this collaborative effort, we are preparing to expand personal identity information  options that will be available in Workday, including gender details, pronouns, and racial subcategories. We will be providing a sneak peak into some of this functionality during our next Functional Overview, which will cover employee self-service:

This 45-minute session will introduce the self-service features of Workday. You will learn more about the Worker Profile and get a preview of how to change your emergency contact, your language, your pronouns and more. We will also give an overview of Workday Mobile.

If you are unable to make the March 31 presentation the recording and demonstration videos will be posted to the Elevate website after the presentation.

Featured Frequently Asked Questions

Will this be launched all at once in Summer 2023, or will this be rolled out gradually to 'beta' groups?
We are not rolling Workday out gradually to beta groups. All users of Workday functionality will go live at the same time. Workday HCM (Human Resources modules) and Finance will go live to all users July 1, 2023. The Budget planning functionality will be rolled out 1/1/2024 to all users, as well.

Does Workday offer language modifications for non-English-speaking users?
Yes, Workday allows users to easily change their display language. There are over 30 different languages to choose from. We will be providing a quick demonstration of this feature during our next Functional Overview.

Will there be customized reporting options made available?
There are a number of ways that users will be able to tailor reports to their needs, including through filters, saved report configurations, and drill-down pivot table options. Additionally, there will be a way for a group of specially-trained users to do ad hoc reporting within the system.

One of the biggest advantages of Workday is that our ERP system will become mobile-friendly. Not only is Workday easily accessible on compatible mobile web browsers, but there is also a mobile app that you will be able to download to your Apple or Android device. Workday Mobile will help you complete tasks in Workday on-the-go.

What will you be able to do in the Workday Mobile app?

  • View your time off balances and request time off
  • View and update your personal information
  • Enroll in learning courses and manage your enrollments
  • Access your Workday Inbox
  • Review and approve business processes on-the-go
  • Receive and view Workday notifications from your phone
