Academic Requirements
Please note: this webpage is intended for learning purposes only and is designed to demonstrate Workday functionality. It does not represent UMD’s final decisions or plans for Academic Requirements.
Academic Requirements are the courses and criteria a student must fulfill to complete their degree — such as general education requirements or requirements specific to their program of study.
In Workday, Academic Requirements are displayed on the Academic Progress Report (APR), organized by each of a student's programs of study. This helps students easily track their progress by showing which requirements have been completed and which are still outstanding.
Academic Requirements Structure
Academic Requirements can be structured around different milestones students must achieve. Student Eligibility Rules help verify that required courses, credits, and other criteria have been completed before a requirement is considered fulfilled such as:
- GPA: A student must meet a minimum GPA in a Program of Study.
- Courses: Students must complete one or more courses.
- Credits: A student must have completed a specific number of credits.
- Residency: A certain number of credits must be completed at the institution.
- Accomplishments: Non-course requirements a student must complete, such as a thesis proposal/defense or scholarly paper.
Academic Requirements Status
When viewing Academic Requirements in the Academic Progress Report, users can see statuses, which are updated in real-time to reflect a student’s progress toward completing them. These statuses include:
- Satisfied: The requirement has been completed by the student.
- In-Progress: A student is working toward a requirement.
- Not-Satisfied: A student has not started or completed any criteria that count toward a requirement.
Example:
Meet Steph.
Steph is a Biology major who has just opened her Academic Progress Report to check in on her progress. Under her Biology Program of Study, she can see two key requirements she's working toward: maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.0 in her Biology coursework and the completion BSCI 170. Looking at both requirements, Steph can see currently holds a 3.2 GPA in her Biology coursework and is currently enrolled in BSCI 170 — keeping her on track to satisfy both requirements.
Key Takeaways
Where can I find my Academic Requirements?
Students can view their Academic Requirements on the Academic Progress Report (APR), where requirements are organized by Program of Study (such as a major, minor, certificate, or graduate program) to help track progress toward completion.
Are Academic Requirements only used to track completed courses?
Academic Requirements can track a range of criteria — such as earning a minimum number of credits, maintaining a minimum GPA, or completing a certain number of credits at a specific institution.
