Student Holds

Home Student Holds

Please note: this webpage is intended for learning purposes only and is designed to illustrate Workday functionality. It does not represent UMD's final decisions or plans for using the Student Holds functionality.

This concept page describes Student Holds that users may encounter in Workday Student.

In Workday, Holds are used to support the completion of key activities, such as meeting with an advisor or addressing outstanding student charges. When a hold is applied, certain actions in Workday Student may be temporarily restricted until the underlying reason is resolved.

From the Action Items and Holds section of the Student Profile, Workday Student presents holds in a clear and transparent way. Each hold includes descriptive information and resolution guidance, helping students and other users understand why a hold exists and what steps may be needed to resolve it.

On a student’s account, Workday Student presents holds across separate tabs for Active and Resolved. This separation helps users easily distinguish between holds that currently affect their account and those that have already been addressed.

When viewing Student Holds in Workday, users will notice the following components:

Created On and Resolved On Dates

In Workday Student, each hold displays the date it was created on the Active Holds tab, giving students visibility into when the hold was applied. Once a hold has been resolved, the Resolved Holds tab shows the date it was removed, helping students track which items have already been addressed.

Hold Reason

The Hold Reason provides the first indication of why a hold has been placed on a student’s account. It offers a high‑level explanation that helps contextualize the hold at a glance. For example (intended for example purposes only and not the actual design or policy), a student might see a hold with a reason such as Student Onboarding, indicating that the hold is related to onboarding activities within Workday Student.

Description

Each hold includes a description that provides additional context about why it appears on a student’s account, offering clearer insight into the hold’s purpose.

Resolution Instructions

In Workday Student, Resolution Instructions are included on a hold to provide clear guidance they may be addressed.

Depending on the situation, resolution instructions might guide a student to complete a task in Workday Student or direct them to contact an appropriate office for additional support.

Hold Type

The Hold Type outlines which actions are affected when a hold is present on a student’s account. It helps users quickly identify the kinds of activities that may be unavailable—such as registration or receiving a diploma—until the hold is addressed.

Multiple Hold Types may be applied dependent on the student’s hold.

Example:

Meet John.

As John prepares to register for the upcoming semester, he reviews the Action Items and Holds section of his Student Profile in Workday Student. There, he sees an active hold indicating that he must meet with his academic advisor before moving forward.

By selecting the hold, John can view additional details explaining why it is in place and how it relates to his account.

The resolution instructions outline the next step, such as meeting with his advisor, and clarify that once this step is completed, the hold will be resolved and his ability to register will be restored.

Key Takeaways
