Future Ready: Key Changes
Tracking Academic Progress in Workday
Workday Student will introduce the Academic Progress Report (APR), a modern degree-audit feature that provides students and advisors with a more comprehensive view of academic progress, degree requirements, and key milestones throughout a student's academic journey.
Why are we making this change?
Students and advisors rely on a degree audit to monitor academic progress throughout a student's time at UMD. In Workday Student, the Academic Progress Report (APR) will provide a more comprehensive view of degree requirements, academic progress, and what remains to support timely progress toward degree completion.
How is this change related to Workday?
Workday Student introduces the Academic Progress Report (APR), a dynamic degree audit feature that students and advisors can use to track a student’s academic journey at UMD. Similar to uAchieve, a student’s program requirements will appear in the Academic Progress Report. However, one key improvement is that the APR will capture all of a student’s programs in one degree audit, versus uAchieve which requires independent audits per program. The APR also provides new capabilities for monitoring a student’s academic progress, including expanded benchmark tracking, plus undergraduate and graduate non-course requirements such as scholarly papers, thesis defenses, and oral defenses.

Why it Matters: From Today to Tomorrow
Today: Current State
Today, students and advisors rely on the uAchieve degree audit to monitor academic progress. While effective for tracking degree requirements, it provides limited visibility into some aspects of a student's academic progress and academic milestones.
While applicable students are able to view their benchmark requirements in uAchieve, they generally must run a separate audit from their major audit.
Non-course requirements for some Graduate programs, such as comprehensive exams, thesis defense, and scholarly presentations are tracked outside of the degree audit.
Additional requirements, such as University requirements, are not all tracked in the degree audit.
Tomorrow: Future State
Beginning in Spring 2028, Workday's degree audit tool, the Academic Progress Report (APR), will provide a comprehensive view of academic progress for both students and advisors. The APR is dynamic, meaning it updates in real time as a student registers for and completes coursework to reflect changes in their academic progress. Program of Study requirements will be built into a student's APR, with the Benchmarks for Undergraduate majors included among those requirements for applicable students.
The Academic Progress Report expands requirement tracking, introducing the ability to track non-course requirements directly in the APR through Student Accomplishment functionality. Student Accomplishments represent non-course requirements a student must complete (e.g. scholarly papers, thesis submission, oral defense) directly on the APR as trackable program requirements.
Finally, Workday's Advisory Program functionality provides the University with the opportunity to combine University-level and General Education requirements into a single Advisory Program, allowing all university requirements to be tracked directly on a student’s Academic Progress Report.
Benefits and Planning for the Future
The Benefits
- The Academic Progress Report (APR) will reflect a student’s academic progress in real-time and will capture all of a student’s programs in one degree audit.
- Expanded tracking capabilities provide greater visibility into non-course requirements that students may need to complete as part of their academic program.
- Advisory program tracking allows key non-major requirements to be tracked alongside a student’s degree-seeking program.
Planning for the Future
- Beginning in Spring 2028, students and advisors are encouraged to review the Academic Progress Report (APR) throughout the semester to monitor progress toward academic requirements, including major, General Education, and University requirements.
- Beginning in Spring 2028, advisors will use the Academic Progress Report (APR) to review benchmark extensions and non-course requirements, helping guide students through requirements that were previously tracked outside the degree audit.
