Looking back on 2021 we had a productive and successful first year of the Elevate Program. We met all of our Program milestones and progressed from planning to making significant design decisions and developing major aspects of the new Workday system’s configuration. Our implementation of Workday Human Capital Management (HCM) and Finance remains on schedule and on budget. 

We are currently in the Configuration and Prototype phase of the Program until June 2022. This stage involves extensive engagement with over 300 stakeholders across our partner institutions as we confirm and elaborate on our initial configurations for Workday HCM and Finance. I want to express my gratitude to all of the individuals who have generously contributed their time to this effort. Having so many engaged stakeholders from our varied departments, colleges, divisions and institutions ensures the best solution for all of our users. For 2022 we anticipate a busy year full of public events, project milestones, and important announcements. With this in mind, and to keep you up-to-date with the Elevate Program’s latest news, we are increasing the frequency of the ElevateR newsletter and will send this out on a monthly basis.

In November 2021, I hosted our first Elevate Town Hall sessions and was delighted to have over 1,000 attendees from the University of Maryland College Park, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, and the University of Maryland System Office. We will schedule a Town Hall presentation for this spring semester so that we can keep everyone informed regarding our progress.

We received a lot of feedback indicating that individuals are eager to learn more about Workday. With this in mind, I am delighted to announce that our monthly series of Functional Overviews will be starting in February 2022! 

In these sessions, the Elevate Program team will demonstrate different parts of the Workday system and answer your questions. Each Functional Overview will focus on a topic (e.g., Procurement, Employee Self Service) and will be available to any individual across our campuses. Please note that Functional Overviews are only intended to provide a brief introduction and overview of Workday systems - full training in the use of Workday will be offered in spring of 2023.

Welcome to Workday: First Look at Workday and Navigation
February 24, 2022 | 10:00 a.m.
This initial Functional Overview will be your first opportunity to get a feel for our new, streamlined system and its capabilities. The Elevate team will share key benefits of Workday and introduce you to the Workday landing page and applications. We’ll demonstrate how to navigate the system, find information using the search bar, access your inbox, and locate your Workday profile. Attendees will also have an opportunity to ask questions.

Elevate's Latest: Customer Confirmation Sessions

The Elevate team is currently holding Customer Confirmation Sessions with members of our PIT (Project Implementation Team) Crews and subject matter experts across our partner campuses. During these sessions, we showcase the business processes built into Workday based on the information we’ve gathered thus far. These sessions create an opportunity to share information and collect feedback from key stakeholders, which will help the Elevate Program team ensure that Workday’s configuration meets the campuses’ needs. A worktag that identifies a unit within the University where a budget is typically assigned. Cost centers will roll up into a cost center hierarchy.

Michelle Seibert Appel has been at the University of Maryland for almost 20 years. Most recently, she was the Director of Assessment and Decision Support in the Office of Institutional Research, Planning, and Assessment (IRPA). Michelle led the team that implemented Tableau and its ecosystem on the University of Maryland - College Park campus. As the Reporting Lead for the Elevate Program, Michelle is excited for a system that promises to make it easier to navigate UMD’s administrative processes for employees and eventually students.

Will Kuali Research be replaced by Workday?
No, Kuali Research (KR) will not be replaced by Workday. However, our team is developing data integrations between Kuali Research and Workday. KR will continue to be the system of record for pre-award activities while Workday will be used for post-award processes.
